Zebra GC420d Monochrome Desktop Direct Thermal Label Printer, 4 in/s Print Speed, 203 dpi Print Resolution, 4.09" Print Width, 110/240V AC

Product Description

The Zebra GC420d monochrome desktop direct thermal label printer has a 32-bit processor, prints 4" per second in black at 203 dpi, and can be used to print labels, tags, receipts, or other media up to 4.09" wide. Direct thermal printers use heat instead of ink and are typically smaller, quieter, faster, and more energy-efficient than dot-matrix printers. The GC420d is a standard level desktop printer that has a maximum print speed of 4" per second at 203 dpi (dots per inch) and can print labels up to 39" long. The 32-bit processor combined with 8 MB of SDRAM memory and 8 MB of flash memory offers faster first label printing with extensive media graphics storage. EPL2 and ZPL I/ZPL II programming languages are standard.

The printer's double-walled casing is made of ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), which helps resist impact. An open-access design facilitates media loading. Parallel, serial, and USB ports allow connectivity to a computer or other devices (cables sold separately). The auto-detectable power adapter can accept AC power between 110 and 240 volts. A reflective sensor allows the printer to identify the gaps, holes, notches, or black marks between labels to print the labels accurately. A transmissive sensor enables it to detect when a roll of media has run out. This printer is suitable for use with tag stock media, roll media, or fanfold media (all sold separately); the maximum outside diameter for rolls is 5".

Like it better than Dymo 4XL
By Steven E
We are trying to find a reasonable priced thermal printer. Compare to Dymo 4XL we bought and returned, this printer sounds and feel more solid. The loading of roll is so much easier. However, pixel quality of 203 is not as good as Dymo 4XL. I like this printer more than Dymo 4XL for the loading process and mechanical construction but printer quality wise, I would only give it a 4 stars because we can clearly see the pixel blocks in the text.

It works
By A. Grubsnalf
Needed this for Etsy labels. After updating my mac to use native software to work, this printer saves me a great deal of time. If you can run OS X 10.6 or greater AND you are comfortable formatting your printer settings, get it.

fast, amazing
By donald r wagner
Works on my Mac. I use Endicia for postage. The whole process of making up a new label takes about 20 seconds, with 1s of that being print time. Cool sound, too. Otherwise silent and at the ready. Rolls of labels are cheap on Amazon. And not nearly so ugly as some of the competitor's models.

LD © Compatible Set of 4 (Series 23) High Yield Black & Color Ink Cartridges for the Dell V515w Printer: 2 Black T105N, 2 Color T106N
Great alternative to Dell cartridges. Had trouble with one of the cartridges and LD immediately sent me out a complete new set not just the one that I had trouble with so I actually received a bonus. They work great in the Dell 515 all in one printer, scanner, fax machine.

If I could give these cartridges a Zero, I would.
By Lorrie Newton
Horrible cartridges, Do NOT buy these. My 2 year old V510 printer was fine with the Dell cartridges. I tryed to save some money and instead I got delayed on a projects because these were unusuable. Unless you want big black and colored circles on everything you print. They leak all over too, so watch your fingers.

Not worth it
By Phx Phil
These cartridges were offered at a good price, and seemed to be compatible when installed in my Dell V515w AIO. My printer is less than a year old and had previously worked fine with the original Dell cartridges and one replacement OEM set installed after. However, the off-brand cartridges tend to clog or dry up quickly, leaving streaks and missing characters after printing only one or two pages. Running the cleaning feature wass ineffective, and the deep cleaning feature only slightly better in temporarily improving the print quality. The maker of these should consider some product improvement.

The price is right.
By Annete McDonald
I only buy Epson ink for my Epson Workforce 600 printer, as I have for all of the five Epson printers which I have had over the years. I have never had any problems with Epson ink.

But buying directly from Epson is expensive, especially since I live in Alaska and Epson thinks that Alaska is the edge of world and charges outrageous shipping costs to ship to here. The price at Amazon.com is discounted 40% and the shipping is free. Who can beat a deal like that? It is even cheaper than buying locally for me.

I always wish that cartridges lasted longer, but I think it is how the printer companies make their money --not with the sale of the printer, but with all of the ink that you have to buy. I also wish that Epson cartridges were refillable.

I do think that the high capacity cartridges are worth the higher price.

WARNING! DOES NOT WORK WITH NX400!
By AMC
I have a NX400 and bought these because I have previously purchased a 68 series in black and they work great! However when I got these 3 colors and I installed them normally as they fit perfectly, but the printer doesn't recognize them! I called Epson @ 800-533-3731 and got a technical support specialist who confirmed that the NX400 will only read the 68 series in black. Just a heads up.

GOOD INK
By Purple Shutter Herbs
The new high capacity Epson "68" ink is great. It has all the same good qualities of Epson's Dura Brite Ultra ink - smudge, water & fade resistant with the added feature of lasting longer. For just a bit more money your ink cartridge life is extended. I think it was a brilliant move. And Amazon often has the best price around!! The multi packs are a great deal.

Prints beautifully, if a little slow...
By C. Bayne
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1EPQCZPY3O7P2 Here's what it takes to print pictures with the SELPHY. The audio is a little low (Sorry!) but you can see how long it takes to print. This is light enough to take along to family gatherings so that you can give your mother prints of her grandchildren to show off immediately.

Prints are under $0.40 each for a package of paper and the ink cartridge. It's more expensive than taking your memory card to your drugstore, but you pay for convenience. The quality of the prints is very high. You can get a rechargeable battery ( Battery Pack NB-CP2L for Selphy CP-600/CP-330/CP-300 Photo )but as of today, it's $57, which I think is a little pricey compared to the cost of the printer, but it would be worth it if you have to print outside a lot.

All in all, this is a good product.

Does exactly what Canon says it will do.
By Terry LC
This printer does exactly what it is advertised to do.

It is easy to set up. It is easy to use. The photographs looks very good. The 4 x 6 photos print in about a minute. Supposedly they last for many, many years. The viewing screen is large enough and looks good. There are basic operations, such as red eye reduction and back-light correction that are useful and easy to use. You can also print in black and white or sepia which is something I like to do, so I appreciate that ability. The owner's manual makes sense and is easy to comprehend, and is not overly complicated. Inserting the ink cartridge and the paper is easy.

I didn't hook this printer up to my computer. I use it with memory cards. It is very easy to use with memory cards. I have not and do not plan to plug it into my computer, so I have no experience with that ability of the machine.

In short, this thing does exactly what the Amazon description and Canon advertising says it will do.

The only problem I see is the cost of the prints. Each 4 x 6 print will cost about 25-30 cents, which isn't overly high, but it is more than twice what I can get prints made for in local stores. Add the cost of the machine, and that will be pretty expensive. However, that cost isn't any surprise, as it can be figured BEFORE you buy this machine.

My wife has commandeered this machine to use for "scrap booking" and she finds it very useful to be able to get any picture she wants, when she wants it, by sticking a memory card in the machine and printing out the few pictures she wants. And she doesn't have to wait around for someone else to develop the pictures and get them back to us. The machine is also very compact and easy to carry around with all of her other scrap booking stuff when she goes to her scrap booking "parties." For that type of use, this is an excellent machine.

As I have had this machine for less than a month, I can not comment on its long-term reliability, but it does seem to be built very well. However, the only other Canon printer I have ever owned did not fare so well in long term reliability, so that does concern me. (Note in the past, if you search my reviews, I have given a Canon printer a 1-star review because it died way too soon.)

Personally, I would like a machine that prints 5 x 7's. If I was buying a printer, I would buy one that has the ability to print 5 x 7's. But I was given this machine, so I can't really complain about that.

To sum up, this machine appears to be an excellent choice for anyone who wants 4 x 6 prints. It works exactly as Canon says it does. It works well. It makes very good prints. But I think the per-print cost to be a bit high, so I knocked the rating down to four stars.

COLOR me impressed
By E. Orchard
Right off the bat, no printer cable. That still irks me. I know, no printer comes with them, but why not?

Setting up the printer was easy - plug it in, install the software and you're off. I choose to print my photos directly from my PC instead of a SD card (since that's where all my photos were). The SELPHY Photo Print software is really easy to use. The startup kit only allows for five photos, so I chose wisely. It takes about 40 seconds to print a full color photo. The photo quality is pretty amazing! I was very impressed. I've been printing with inkjet printers for over 10 years and if you haven't used the printer in awhile, there's always some ink waste in getting the photo to turn out right. Plus, you always need to calibrate and clean your print heads. None of what will be necessary with this machine.

The unit is small and attractive. The giant white power adapter is not! And why a white power adapter for a black unit? I couldn't believe the size of the AC adapter for this thing! Kinda kills the whole small and portable thing, but there is a battery pack available for this unit.

The process in which this printer prints pictures is very cool and I hadn't seen anything like it before. It transfers via thermal film and puts down the yellow (Y), the magenta (M), the cyan (C), and then the black (B). So the photo paper makes four passes through the printer. When it makes the first pass, you see a yellow photo, then a yellow+magenta photo, etc. It's kinda cool to watch. Once your "cartridge" is used, you throw it out, something I wasn't keen on. From what I can tell, these are not recyclable and that's not a good thing. Canon is usually pretty green, so I can only hope some sort of recycling will exist for these bulky plastic cartridges. There's likely something on their website (I hope). The cartridges seem very wasteful and the 108 photo/cartridge pack means you'll be throwing THREE cartridges away when you're done.

Though there is a cute little credit-card sized photo option, it requires a separate tray and obviously, smaller paper. It seems like they could have combined the (only) two paper sizes in the same cartridge with a lever or something. But, each paper size requires a different cartridge. I have not been ablebto find the smaller credit-card sized paper/paper tray/cartridge anywhere else besides Canon's site. That's frustrating. I'd love to make tiny photos!

Overall, I like it, though it seems a little wasteful and costly. Cost per print for the 108 photo pack is about 27 cents/image right now. Not too bad.

PROS:
* Small printer, small footprint
* Excellent photo quality
* Software is easy to use, if even a little *too* simplistic
* One photo in about 40 seconds
* Variety of connection methods (USB, SD card, memory stick, cell phone [with bluetooth add-on $50])
* Heat transfer is nicer to deal with than messy ink tanks
* No print calibration or alignment needed
* No messy ink or waiting for photo to "dry"

CONS:
* Wasteful cartridges - a very specialty item that cannot be reused or refilled
* Giant AC adapter
* Each paper size requires its own cartridge AND paper tray
* Can only print two different sizes of photos - not an all-purpose device
* Expensive add-ons (Battery $80, Bluetooth Adapter $50)
* Credit-card sized paper, tray and cartridge are hard to find and expensive

Did not work on dell 720 printer
By A. Chakrawarti
I purchased this set from Abacus. Since my black cartridge ran out I installed the new one in the printer after removing the plastic attachment and the plastic tab. I ran several test prints and installed and reinstalled the cartridge multiple times but it still did not work. I returned both cartridges to Abacus and have received a refund. I repurchased a single black catridge from eforcity and this cartridge worked fine.

YOU WILL PAY FOR O C PRODUCTS MISTAKES
By Kevin P. Bell
THANK GOD MY PURCHASE WAS MADE THROUGH AMAZON!

I PURCHASED THESE INK CARTRAGES THROUGH AMAZON FROM O C PRODUCTS. THEY INDICATED ON THE WEBSITE THAT THE CARTRAGES WERE COMPATABLE WITH SERIES 5 MACHINES BUT SENT SERIES 1 CARTRAGES INSTEAD. THEY REFUSED TO SEND A PREPAID RMA TO RETURN THE ITEMS, EVEN AFTER ADMITTING THAT THE ERROR WAS THEIRS!

THIS IS THE REASON I DON'T LIKE PURCHASING ITEMS THAT ARE NOT ELIGABLE FOR AMAZON PRIME.

I AM SENDING THE ITEMS BACK TO THE VENDOR AS AMAZON REQUESTED AND AMAZON IS CREDITING THE ENTIRE COST BACK TO MY CREDIT CARD.

BE WARNED, DO NOT BUY FROM O C PRODUCTS, YOU WILL PAY ONCE FOR THE PRODUCT, THEY WILL SHIP THE WRONG ONE, YOU WILL PAY IN AGGRAVATION TO GET AN RMA AND YOU WILL PAY AGAIN TO SHIP IT BACK TO O C PRODUCTS. I DON'T KNOW IF THEIR PRODUCTS WORK BECAUSE THEY SEND THE WRONG ONES AND THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE WILL CAUSE YOU AGGRAVATION AND GRIEF. STICK WITH AMAZON PRODUCTS, SENT BY AMAZON PRIME. THAT WAY YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR GETTING AND ANY ERRORS WILL BE MADE RIGHT.

Printworks 100 Percent Recycled Multipurpose Paper, 20 Pound, 92 Bright, 400 sheets, 8.5 x 11 Inches (00018)

Product Description

Printworks 100% Recycled Multipurpose Paper takes the common belief that what's good for the environment needs to be expensive and turns it on its ear. While most economical, recycled papers are made with 30% recycled fiber, this is 100% recycled, more than 3 times the recycled content but around the same price. And it's made right here in the U.S.A. from recovered food and beverage containers and other paper-based materials that are collected locally (versus about 40% of traditional recycled papers made from materials shipped to and then from Asia). It keeps transportation costs down, keeps materials out of landfills, and reduces the carbon footprint, reducing the environmental and economical costs to you. This multipurpose ream is 92 bright and 20 lbs., perfect for every printing job at home, in the home office, school or office.

Greenwashing: 100% PRE-Consumer
By Bradley W. Morris
I considered buying this paper. I mean a relatively cheap, 100% recycled paper sounds great, right?

I thought I'd do some research first. You see, I know that before the green revolution, before recycling was in the public consciousness, paper companies would already "recycle" paper scraps instead of throwing them away. No reason to throw away perfectly good pulp--that wouldn't make financial sense.

So you may have heard the term "post-consumer" applied to recycled products--noticeably absent here. Buying recycled products with post-consumer content actually close that triangular recycling loop. Remember that it doesn't matter how much you recycle if you/people never buy products made from the stuff you recycle?

Well this paper is NOT made from stuff you recycle. It's 100% PRE-consumer content. Yes, their video cleverly calls the paper cups, etc. from which the paper is made "recyclable". However, that doesn't mean those products ever saw a consumer, and were actually *recycled*, in the important POST-consumer sense.

I'm not saying it's not good that the factory-seconds from other paper ventures are used. That's great. What I'm saying is that they would do this kind of thing anyway to save money, and in the past, this had nothing to do with being environmentally sustainable, as opposed to being economically sustainable, and so you'd never have been told the paper's "recycled".

So to me, the marketing of this paper is a clear example of "greenwashing", where a company (wrongly) tries to convince you you're saving the planet if you buy their product. Maybe I'm wrong and it's more complicated, but it's hard for me to see how.

Yes, the paper is cheap when compared to many options that actually are eco-friendly. I'm not telling you not to buy it (though I certainly won't). I'm just saying don't kid yourself if you think you're being eco-friendly by buying this paper. I prefer not to support companies that clearly try to mislead me, especially when they're blameworthy for trying to leverage my sense of moral responsibility in order to make a buck. I hope you're the same.

Here's my interaction with the company, from 3/5/13.
Me: "Is your "100% Recycled Multipurpose Paper" completely, exclusively made from post-consumer waste, or is it just 100% "recycled", where "recycled" content can include things like trimmings from factory production that were never used by a consumer? Thank you for your time."
Printworks: "Thank you for your inquiry and interest in Printworks multipurpose papers. Our 00018, 100% Recycled Multipurpose paper is from pre-consumer waste. Here's a link to the video to explain the entire process for your reference - http://youtu.be/qwRaYGkaKbw.

"Please let us know if we can be of further assistance."

Fabulous paper that's healing the earth!
By Edith MacIntyre
This paper is very sturdy and thick, and a great, bright white color. All of the big, bright color photos and documents I've printed on this paper have come out perfectly. Just as importantly, this paper is made from 100% recycled paper, which not only saves many trees, but also completes the recycling process. Recycling only works if people buy and use products made of recycled materials. This is a great price, to top it all off! Get this paper--you won't be disappointed!

Great paper
By RavEve
I love that this paper is 100% recycled. To be honest, not too much you can say about paper, but it is a good weight, and not an off-white color. Go green, get 100% recycled paper, then recycle it when you are done!
