Printworks 100 Percent Recycled Multipurpose Paper, 20 Pound, 92 Bright, 400 sheets, 8.5 x 11 Inches (00018)

Product Description

Printworks 100% Recycled Multipurpose Paper takes the common belief that what's good for the environment needs to be expensive and turns it on its ear. While most economical, recycled papers are made with 30% recycled fiber, this is 100% recycled, more than 3 times the recycled content but around the same price. And it's made right here in the U.S.A. from recovered food and beverage containers and other paper-based materials that are collected locally (versus about 40% of traditional recycled papers made from materials shipped to and then from Asia). It keeps transportation costs down, keeps materials out of landfills, and reduces the carbon footprint, reducing the environmental and economical costs to you. This multipurpose ream is 92 bright and 20 lbs., perfect for every printing job at home, in the home office, school or office.

Greenwashing: 100% PRE-Consumer
By Bradley W. Morris
I considered buying this paper. I mean a relatively cheap, 100% recycled paper sounds great, right?

I thought I'd do some research first. You see, I know that before the green revolution, before recycling was in the public consciousness, paper companies would already "recycle" paper scraps instead of throwing them away. No reason to throw away perfectly good pulp--that wouldn't make financial sense.

So you may have heard the term "post-consumer" applied to recycled products--noticeably absent here. Buying recycled products with post-consumer content actually close that triangular recycling loop. Remember that it doesn't matter how much you recycle if you/people never buy products made from the stuff you recycle?

Well this paper is NOT made from stuff you recycle. It's 100% PRE-consumer content. Yes, their video cleverly calls the paper cups, etc. from which the paper is made "recyclable". However, that doesn't mean those products ever saw a consumer, and were actually *recycled*, in the important POST-consumer sense.

I'm not saying it's not good that the factory-seconds from other paper ventures are used. That's great. What I'm saying is that they would do this kind of thing anyway to save money, and in the past, this had nothing to do with being environmentally sustainable, as opposed to being economically sustainable, and so you'd never have been told the paper's "recycled".

So to me, the marketing of this paper is a clear example of "greenwashing", where a company (wrongly) tries to convince you you're saving the planet if you buy their product. Maybe I'm wrong and it's more complicated, but it's hard for me to see how.

Yes, the paper is cheap when compared to many options that actually are eco-friendly. I'm not telling you not to buy it (though I certainly won't). I'm just saying don't kid yourself if you think you're being eco-friendly by buying this paper. I prefer not to support companies that clearly try to mislead me, especially when they're blameworthy for trying to leverage my sense of moral responsibility in order to make a buck. I hope you're the same.

Here's my interaction with the company, from 3/5/13.
Me: "Is your "100% Recycled Multipurpose Paper" completely, exclusively made from post-consumer waste, or is it just 100% "recycled", where "recycled" content can include things like trimmings from factory production that were never used by a consumer? Thank you for your time."
Printworks: "Thank you for your inquiry and interest in Printworks multipurpose papers. Our 00018, 100% Recycled Multipurpose paper is from pre-consumer waste. Here's a link to the video to explain the entire process for your reference - http://youtu.be/qwRaYGkaKbw.

Fabulous paper that's healing the earth!
By Edith MacIntyre
This paper is very sturdy and thick, and a great, bright white color. All of the big, bright color photos and documents I've printed on this paper have come out perfectly. Just as importantly, this paper is made from 100% recycled paper, which not only saves many trees, but also completes the recycling process. Recycling only works if people buy and use products made of recycled materials. This is a great price, to top it all off! Get this paper--you won't be disappointed!

Great paper
By RavEve
I love that this paper is 100% recycled. To be honest, not too much you can say about paper, but it is a good weight, and not an off-white color. Go green, get 100% recycled paper, then recycle it when you are done!
