Inexpensive Airprint Printer
By Stanley Piekarski
Haven't owned an Apple product since 1983 (Apple II+). My wife expressed an interest in an iPad so I looked into it and liked it very much. I knew that "airprint" might be a problem with my home network based on Windows computers. I looked into various apps for Airprint & finally decided it would be best to buy an inexpensive printer. I already have a Canon MX 870 wireless printer on my network as well as a Canon IP 4600 USB printer both of which I like very much. Canon printers with airprint capability were all too expensive for my blood.

After a week I can say I like the Epson very much.

Incorporated onto my wireless network via an USB cable attached to a 5 year old Dell desktop with a Linksys E 1500 router. A firmware update was downloaded automatically during installation with the CD from Epson. An USB cable did not come with the printer, but fortunately I could use the same one as my IP 4600.

The iPad immediately detected the Epson on my network and has been working well.

The printer also works well with my 2 Dell desktops and 2 HP laptops.

Very impressed.

I have set up quite a few wifi printers in my day and this one blows them all out of the water. It was done in less than 10 minutes. A stark comparison to the hours I have spent trying to configure HP wifi printers (that were far more pricy).
This printer sets up via the WPS button on your network router, which most if not all newer routers have. It should be a small button on the back of your router. Just hold the WPS button and the wifi button the printer at the same time for three seconds and BAM. It's connected. It's seriously that simple.
No configuring IP's, no firewall garbage, no spending hours with tech support, just quick and painless.
I almost went the with XP-400 as it has the LCD screen, but it's really not necessary for the price difference. I don't miss it, it prints fine. I even downloaded the Epson iPrint app for my iPhone have been printing from my phone to the printer.
It's also very small considering it is also a scanner. Long gone are the days of behemoth all in one's.
Ink is very reasonable and it requires 4 cartridges. Black, Yellow, Pink and Cyan.
Very impressed.

good basic printer
By bobsmom
I was able to buy this printer locally for $50 when my old printer dropped dead, so shop around. It's pretty slow and I haven't tested it on photos or the scan function. The paper tray doesn't hold many sheets. Print quality is good, setup was easy. It does eat ink, so be sure to set the quality to "draft" or "text" in the Properties setup screen if you don't need max print darkness. If you do a lot of printing you will not be happy with this one, but for me it is adequate.
